A School Horses Life

Our school horses and ponies are all very special to us at Forest Park Riding & Equitation School! We have horses and ponies of different breeds, ages, genders and personality to give our clients a diverse, fun and educational experience.They are very carefully selected to be part of our team based upon their temperaments, personalities and work ethic. All of our school ponies and horses undergo a lot of training to ensure that they can best look after and teach our clients new skills.

Our horses are all very happy with their daily routines - being loved by so many lovely children and adults in the ACT. They receive the best feeding, grooming, dental, hoof and veterinary care that we can provide and all love to spend time in their lovely big paddocks when they are not being used for lessons. In winter they are rugged and they are groomed often by our staff and students. Some of our school horses/ponies have lived well into their late 40's - showing how happy and content they are with their lives. Our horses are given a diverse range of riding activities at Forest Park - spending time in the 3 different arenas, playing games, jumping, flatwork and trail rides around the natural beauty of Stromlo. Every lesson and trail ride is different for our horses to ensure they have enrichment and fun.

They all love trail riding, lessons and just being around people. Every single horse has a different personality and teach us different skills when we ride them. Next time you have a lesson, ask your instructor what skills your particular pony/horse can teach you!

Ponies and Galloways:
13.2hh Palomino Gelding Romeo is a willing little pony which the kids enjoy. He loves trail rides, jumping and is super at mounted games. Kids love getting to work with Romeo over our week long camps to experience how versatile and talented he is in all disciplines.
11.3hh Flaxen Welsh Gelding Speedy is one of the most genuine ponies you’ll find. He is perfect to do anything with. He is great in private lessons, in groups and on trail rides and often the pony to take all over first timers. Speedy is the full package and an adorable member of our team.
14hh Chestnut Gelding Pumpkin is a super affectionate pony and hard to pass on a cuddle with him. Pumpkin has a canter that you could sit to all day long. He is a willing pony and has never said no to learning something new.

Horses:
15.2hh Black Clydesdale x Standardbred Mare Holly is a beautiful horse inside and out. Her beautiful temperament made her a perfect mother to some very well bred horses that the Hughes family are very proud of. Anyone that rides her falls in love with her extremely comfortable gate and her will to work hard for her riders.
16hh Chestnut Thoroughbred Gelding Larry has been great for our advanced riders to develop correct rein contact and correct use of their seat aids as he has such natural swing through the back and beautifully soft in your hands. Although very handy for our higher level dressage clients in the arena Larry’s true passion is trail riding and most weekends you’ll find him as your trail ride leader.
16.3hh Chestnut Thoroughbred Gelding Simba has an outstanding attitude and a great work ethic. He takes everything in his stride, no task is too much for this horse. He is a pleasure to watch in the lessons and very reliable and trustworthy. His favourite is to go for a nice long trail ride in the forest.
